Outside Boards Program

What It Is?

The Outside Boards program is a two-part program designed to introduce you to the benefits of outside boards. You’ll also find out how to establish a board and tap into the support, feedback, and advice of trusted outsiders.

In today’s constantly changing marketplace, it’s becoming more critical to get help. Yet many owners feel that they don’t need outside boards. You’ve made it this far on your own and don’t like the thought of outsiders telling you what to do in the future. You believe your company is different, and you don’t think anyone else really understands your business. Or maybe you think you just can’t afford to pay them, or that outside boards are only for larger companies. Not so!

During Part I of the program, you’ll learn about outside boards and then hear from leaders, entrepreneurs, and business owners who have been in your situation and have faced the same questions you are addressing today. You will participate in a mock board exercise to observe and experience a board meeting firsthand. You’ll also hear how it can help set the direction of your organization, serve as a sounding board on business strategies, and help you achieve your goals.

You will leave the program with:

  • A clear understanding of an outside board’s potential value
  • Details on recruiting, evaluating, and starting a board
  • In-depth information on what’s involved in guiding an outside board
  • Best practices for maximizing a board’s potential
  • The ability to return to the program at any time without additional fees

Part II of the Outside Boards program, included with the cost, is personalized support from an Aileron business advisor who will help you assess your readiness for a board. Up to two trial boards are included as well, which affords you the opportunity to experience and “test drive” a board without any risk or obligation. Aileron will help you to prepare and conduct a live board session based on the specific issues and opportunities your organization is currently facing. During the trial board, Aileron consultants, staff members, or other qualified business leaders will serve as your board members. If you’re committed to creating a board after going through the readiness assessment and trial board experience, Aileron will work with you to identify potential members, prepare a meeting agenda, and develop a profile of the board members you need.
